Areas of Practice
-
READING
Students who have been failed by school systems or reading remediation programs are often referred to Irini. Irini understands the complex cognitive and neural pathways involved in reading to maximize reading success. Irini has completed coursework in Orton-Gillingham, Reading Simplified, Structured Word Inquiry, and more.
-
SPELLING
Irini teaches spelling beyond the textbook of spelling conventions. Clients develop an understanding of the elegant and complex orthographic system of English, and realize they don’t have to memorize weekly spelling lists, only to forget them after a quiz.
-
WRITING
Writing is a complex task that requires knowledge of mechanics, usage, and grammar, as well as text structure, organization, critical thinking, and creativity. It is also taxing on executive function skills. Irini works with students to bring all the pieces together to help them become successful writers.
The Process
-
Intake
Irini begins with an intake call to gather the information she needs to begin assessment with your child. Over the phone, Irini will go over the assessment and therapy process, and provide you with an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. This call also helps to ensure there will be a good fit between Irini's services and the child's needs.
-
Assessment
Irini will conduct an assessment to determine where a student is struggling. The assessment is tailored to the concerns expressed by parents, caregivers, or clients themselves. Irini often requests samples of work completed by the student, and asks to review report cards, IEP documents, and reports from other professionals.
After assessment, findings are reviewed with parents or caregivers and a customized therapy plan is created.
-
Treatment
Literacy goals are agreed upon with caregivers prior to the start of therapy. They are formulated based on the needs and concerns raised by family, clients, or school staff. Therapy can also involve working on executive function skills required for academic success such as organization, prioritization, and planning. Frequency of sessions is jointly determined with families.
Case Consultations
Irini often has clinicians and caregivers who are seeking an unbiased, third-party review of a child’s case. During these consultations, Irini will review the child’s comprehensive medical, developmental, and social background, IEP, and history of intervention. She will problem solve regarding next steps and provide recommendations for additional testing (if indicated), therapeutic targets, and approaches. Case consultations are provided for the areas of language, literacy, and learning disabilities.
